Better French ("we", "us", "our") operates the Better French website, iOS and Android apps, and related services. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information.

1. Information We Collect

Information you provide:

• Account information (email address, password)
• Authentication via third-party services (Apple Sign-In, Google Sign-In)
• Profile information (name, language level, preferences)
• Payment information (processed by our payment providers; we do not store card details)
• Communications you send us

Information collected automatically:

• Usage data (articles read, features used, time spent, learning progress)
• Device information (browser type, operating system, device type)
• Push notification tokens (if you enable notifications)
• Location data (country, region, city - based on IP address or your preferences)
• Log data (IP address, access times, pages viewed)
• Cookies and similar technologies (on the website)
• A random identifier for your app installation, and a separate identifier for each visit (see Section 4)
• Crash and error reports (what went wrong, on which screen, on which app version)

2. How We Use Your Information

• Provide, maintain, and improve our service
• Personalize your experience and content recommendations
• Track your learning progress and streaks
• Process payments and manage subscriptions
• Send service-related communications
• Send push notifications (such as daily news updates and streak reminders, with your permission)
• Send marketing communications (with your consent)
• Display advertisements to free-tier users (see Section 3)
• Analyze usage patterns to improve our service
• Diagnose crashes, errors, and places in the app where people get stuck
• Detect and prevent fraud or abuse
• Comply with legal obligations

3. Advertising

We may display light advertisements to users on our free plan. These ads may be personalized based on:

• Your location (country, region, or city)
• Your language preferences
• General usage patterns

Pro subscribers do not see advertisements. We do not sell your personal data to advertisers.

4. Analytics

We use PostHog to understand how the app is used, so we can see where people get stuck and fix it. PostHog receives the events the app records (screens opened, features used, subscription steps), along with your device model, operating system, app version, language, and time zone. This data is held by PostHog on servers inside the European Union.

We do not record your screen. PostHog is able to record a visual replay of a session. We have switched that off, and the app does not do it.

Device identifier. The first time the app starts, it generates a random identifier and stores it on your device. Its only purpose is to connect what happened before you created an account to the account you go on to create, so that we can measure whether the first run of the app works. It is random, it is specific to Better French, and it is used only inside our own service and the providers listed in Section 5. It is not your device's advertising identifier, and it is not a hardware identifier or serial number: neither Apple nor Google can use it to recognise you elsewhere. Deleting and reinstalling the app resets it, and the new install starts with a fresh one. A second identifier marks each visit and is replaced once you have been away from the app for more than 30 minutes.

None of this is used to follow you across other companies' apps or websites, for advertising or for anything else, and we do not sell it.

5. Sharing Your Information

We may share your information with:

• Service providers: Companies that help us operate our service, including Supabase (database and authentication), RevenueCat (subscription management), Apple and Google (sign-in and payments), Vercel (hosting), Resend (email delivery), PostHog (product analytics, hosted in the European Union), and Sentry (crash and error reporting)
• Advertising partners: To display relevant ads to free-tier users (in anonymized or aggregated form where possible)
• Legal requirements: When required by law, court order, or government request
• Business transfers: In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets
• With your consent: When you explicitly agree to share information

6. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on secure servers provided by industry-leading cloud infrastructure providers. We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information, including encryption in transit and at rest. However, no method of transmission over the Internet is 100% secure.

7. Data Retention

We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you services. We may retain certain information for longer periods as required by law or for legitimate business purposes (such as resolving disputes or enforcing agreements).

8. Your Rights (GDPR)

If you are located in the European Economic Area, you have the right to:

• Access: Request a copy of your personal data
• Rectification: Correct inaccurate or incomplete data
• Erasure: Request deletion of your data ("right to be forgotten")
• Portability: Receive your data in a machine-readable format
• Restriction: Limit how we use your data
• Objection: Object to processing based on legitimate interests
• Withdraw consent: Withdraw consent at any time where we rely on consent

9. Cookies and Tracking

We use cookies and similar technologies to:

• Keep you logged in
• Remember your preferences
• Analyze how our service is used
• Support service functionality

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Disabling cookies may affect functionality.

The mobile app does not track you across other companies' apps and websites, so it does not ask for permission to do so.

10. Third-Party Links

Our service may contain links to third-party websites (such as news sources). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of these external sites. We encourage you to review their privacy policies.

11. Children's Privacy

Our service is not intended for children under 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If we learn we have collected such information, we will delete it promptly.

12. International Data Transfers

Your information may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place for such transfers in compliance with applicable data protection laws.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date. Your continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance.
